Let me preface this by saying, I'm not a boxer or mma fighter. I've watched both combat sports and enjoy them. Let me also say that as a person, I can't stand Floyd mayweather. All his issues with domestic abuse and how he carries himself really annoys me. the way he spends his money is his business but his general attitude towards what he has achieved leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Conor mcgregor on the other hand despite his extremely braggadocios persona seems like a decent guy. There are tons of more knowledgeable people online or tv that have broken down why or why not mcgregor has a chance so I'm not really going to talk about that

But...none of this matters. at the end of the day, mcgregor is stepping in the ring with arguably one of the greatest defensive boxers of the last 50 years. On top of that he has never had a professional boxing match in his life. 49 other men who are in fact professional boxers have faced mayweather and only 2 or 3 have even touched him. and these men were the top of their profession. But mcgregor with no experience will be the guy that figures out the mayweather equation when they couldn't? Some of the comments on message boards and social media have elevated mcgregor to godlike status. he is like william wallace in braveheart. "He stands 10 feet tall and will crush you with his pinky"

I feel like this is the only time in history where facts, evidence, and actual experience doesn't matter. the only thing that is important is the feeling that mcgregor can win. The only evidence is that he is conor mcgregor and he has shocked the world before. He has...in mma. boxing is a different animal. either people don't care or don't understand the difference. There is also one of the reasons he is so popular whether people admit it or not, is his nationality. when you are irish and have such a rabid fan base, you can really do no wrong. none of his fans will say that hemay have bitten off more than he can chew. if and When he loses his fans will blame mayweather for being a "pussy" and not fighting him "proper" forgetting that floyd has and always will be a defensive fighter. For a lot of boxing fans this is a slap in the face to the boxing community and if by some miracle mayweather were to lose, in my opinion boxing would be inexorably damaged. it would make it out to be a joke that anybody could do it and beat the best in the world. it would be great for mma although I'd argue that no one would dispute that mma fighters are the baddest combat athletes on the planet.

my take is that this is nothing more than a payday for both and at best a distraction for whatsreally going on in the world. I guess we will just have to wait and see in August.
